Introduce
the newspaper
to science class using one of these activities:
Many
processes are involved in the making of a newspaper.
Beginning
with the production of the paper and the ink used, have students
investigate as many of the processes as they are interested
in.
Students
may wish to carry out investigations in groups. Individual
groups can then present their findings to the class.
Topics
of interest may include:
- Paper’s
production from plantation to transporting papers.
- Newsprint
ink. The inks currently being used and the inks being tested
for more environmentally friendly use in the near future.
- The
recycling of material that occurs in the newspaper industry,
including newspapers, office papers and the recycled toner
cartridges used in the office photocopiers.
